R4i Gold 3DS Card Review,Buy R4i Gold DSI 3DS card from
This is an essential product for the new generation of homebrew on this revolutionary console! Don’t think you can get away with your old R4 cards! They will fit into the 3DS top slot perfectly. However, when the 3DS is booted, no card is detected!
Below, I’ve provided a brief review of the R4i3DS card, courtesy of www.r4ds-ds.com.
I received the R4i3DS card in about five days (sent from Hong Kong to UK). It arrived well-packaged and didn’t appear to be damaged in any way. The R4 box itself is very similar to previous R4 Gold products. The key differences however include a small red 3DS sticker (picture 1). I guess R4 have tried to save money and resources by using an established box design, although this could open the door for fake products!
Inside, the R4i3DS card is well-packaged in a transparent plastic holding which provides a secure fit for the flash card itself and the micro SD reader (picture 2). The Flash card comes with its own case (like previous R4 products) and appears to provide good protection. The USB Micro SD reader is the same as those packed with other R4 cards. This is a simple to use plug-and-play device that needs little instruction to use.

The R4i3DS card itself has a typical design of any Nintendo DS card and fits neatly into the 3DS’s top slot without difficultly (picture 3). Similarly, it can be removed easily. The micro SD slot is in its usual place. Again, I found that my micro SD card could be removed and inserted without trouble.
Inserting R4i3DS card into top-slot
Before you can load a micro SD card straight into the R4i3DS and into your console, you’ll need to download the latest firmware from www.r4ids.cn. This website is easy to navigate and if you select downloads –> kernel you’ll find the necessary software in the language of your choice. If you don’t do this the R4iDS card will simply “hang” in a loading screen when you attempt to boot with a micro SD card.
There are also other downloads on the website, including user-generated themes and skins.
I was already using a micro SD card for an old R4 flash card. I simply downloaded the new firmware to it so it could be used in the R4i3DS (after decompressing it of course). The simplest way to do this is by dragging and dropping the new files onto your micro SD card (just overwrite existing files).
Once the R4i3DS card is loaded with the micro SD you are ready to go!
When you switch on your 3DS the card will be detected as a “Meet the Robinsons” icon. Don’t panic! This is normal (picture 4). Just load the file and then you’ll be presented with a R4 title screen and then the GUI (picture 5). I won’t dwell too much on the GUI except it follows a similar style to the native 3DS GUI being simple to navigate. There are distinct icons for video, music, games and so on. I’ve tested loads of software including roms (with WOODR4) and all seem to be working without problem!
